Your questions answered
Why do some of your CAPM® course dates and times match the PMP® ones exactly?
Millpond often runs PMP® and CAPM® exam preparation training as one course. These combined courses are 35 hours of course delivery to accommodate the pre-requisites for PMP® and each delegate is issued study materials relevant for the exam they intend to sit. At a high level, the content for both exams is the same – project management is project management, but the two exams test your knowledge in a different way. CAPM® is more term/definition based while PMP® is situational based. We find that PMP® delegates get the benefit of (re)exposure to the basics/theory of project management in these courses, and CAPM® delegates gain an appreciation of the more applied aspects of the profession at the same time as getting a fantastic grounding.
Why do many of your courses span several weeks?
We know real learning and deep understanding takes time. Students must understand, appreciate, assimilate, and apply the knowledge they learn in order to not only pass the exam but also to retain the knowledge and be able to use it in their jobs. Although our competitors offer shorter exam preparation courses for those in a hurry, these courses feature a high degree of rote learning, or memorisation techniques rather than a deep understanding of concepts and principles and the time to think about how to apply them. Millpond prefers not to measure success based purely on your pass or fail in the exam, but rather we value real insight and advancement in your professional development.
Is there any pre-reading and how much will I have to study while on the course?
There is no pre-reading, but once the course has started, you will have study and exercises to complete between the sessions.
The course is presented at a fast pace, so reviewing the materials between sessions is a good idea.
The amount of on-course study and revision you will require to pass the exam will depend on your familiarity with the concepts, how recently you have been in an education setting, and what your particular learning style is. To maximise your chances of success in the exam, we recommend at least the same number of hours between each session as the session itself and the same again after the course and before the exam.
Should I become a paid-up member of PMI?
It’s not required but we highly recommend it for the member-only savings; learning opportunities; time-saving tools and templates; and local community connections. Make sure you join before paying the exam fee!
How long is the CAPM® exam?
150 questions over 3 hours.
What is the pass rate?
PMI does not disclose the pass rate. You will not receive a score, and you will not know which questions you answered correctly. Your result will be scored across a range from Needs Improvement, Below Target, Target, Above Target.
What type of questions are in the CAPM® exam?
There are 13 categories in the CAPM® Exam. The CAPM® exam is constructed from a bank of questions. Not everyone answers the same questions. Check out the CAPM® Exam Content Outline more details.
Will I have to renew the CAPM® certification?
All PMI certifications require that you engage in continuous professional development to remain certified. In brief, to maintain your CAPM® certification, you must earn 15 professional development units (PDU’s) over three years. The full requirements for each certification can be found within the Continuing Certification Requirements Handbook.
How Many Professional Development Units (PDU’s) can I claim for attending this Training Course?
1 hour of formal training with Millpond is equivalent to 1 PDU.
Where can I sit the exam?
PMI's exams are delivered by Pearson Vue which means that you can take your exam in the comfort of your home or office while being monitored by an offsite proctor (learn more here), or if you live in a major centre there may be a testing centre near you for an in-person exam.
CAPM® or PMP®?
The CAPM® certification is designed for people who do not have the required experience to obtain the Project Management Professional (PMP®) Certification. If you meet the PMP® credential criteria, you should definitely sit the PMP® exam.
The PMP® certification recognises demonstrated competence in leading and directing project teams. If you’re an experienced project manager looking to solidify your skills, stand out to employers and maximise your earning potential, the PMP® credential is the right choice for you.
If you’re a less experienced project manager looking to demonstrate your commitment to project management, improve your ability to manage larger projects, earn additional responsibility and stand out to potential employers, the CAPM® certification is right for you.
What's the difference between the PMBOK Guide® and PRINCE2®?
The PMBOK Guide® is an umbrella term for several project management standards and guides produced by the US-based Project Management Institute (PMI), the world’s leading project management organisation with more than 600,000 members and more than 300 local chapters around the world. It is a framework - more detailed than a high-level approach to thinking about a task, but not as prescriptive as a methodology - and comprises several standards and practice guides, along with a complete glossary of Project Management Terms.
It is widely accepted that PMBOK Guide® is best practice in project management. Due to its solid reputation and applicability to a range of projects, all current or aspiring project managers should be familiar with the PMBOK framework.
PRINCE2® (short for Projects In Controlled Environments) is a process-based methodology of project management. It’s the de facto standard for the UK Government and is popular with government organisations everywhere.
Both offer processes, but the PMBOK® Guide is a collection of experience-based knowledge, while PRINCE2® is a specific set of techniques. Where the PMBOK® Guide is informative, PRINCE2® is instructional. If the PMBOK® Guide is a toolbox, PRINCE2® is an assembly guide.
