Project Management Fundamentals vs CAPM®: Which is best for you?

Unlocking Your Path to Success:  Exploring Early Career Project Management Training Options with Millpond

So, you’ve made the decision to change careers, and you are wanting to work out where to start?

Embarking on a career change can be an exhilarating yet overwhelming decision.  If you’re currently pondering where to begin, fear not!  At Millpond, we recognise the challenges that come with such a significant shift and understand the importance of having the right information at your fingertips.  With that in mind, we have prepared the following article to be able to answer some of the crucial questions you may have as you start your project management journey.

“You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so… get on your way”. – Dr. Seuss.

Project Management Fundamentals vs CAPM®

Millpond highly recommends two training options that can help you get started and build a strong foundation.

If you’re new to project management or have limited experience in the field, a great option is a two-day Millpond delivered course known as Project Management Fundamentals (PMF), which is perfect for individuals who have been working in operational roles, performing repetitive tasks without much room for change. PMF also serves as a valuable introduction for those who are still considering a career move into project management and want to gather more information about the role and its responsibilities.

On the other hand, if you already have some exposure to projects or change management, Millpond suggests enrolling in the Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM) course, which spans five days. To take the CAPM exam, there is a prerequisite of completing 23 hours of prior education. If needed, this requirement can be met by successfully finishing the PMF course discussed earlier. CAPM is designed to assess your understanding of fundamental knowledge, processes, and terminology outlined in the Project Management Body of Knowledge® (PMBOK Guide®).

The content of the CAPM course follows the natural lifecycle of a project, focusing on key areas, artifacts, and phases. It starts with foundational concepts, introducing common project management terms and definitions. Over the course of 35 hours, the training delves into specific aspects of project delivery, discussing practical approaches and real-life examples—both successes and failures. After covering each important topic, our Millpond trainer provides insights into how the material would be presented in the CAPM exam and suggests additional study resources for further preparation.

By offering both the PMF and CAPM courses, Millpond aims to cater to individuals with different levels of experience and career goals. Whether you’re looking to gain a basic understanding of project management or seeking certification to validate your knowledge and skills, these training options can provide you with the necessary tools and knowledge to succeed in the field.
